What does the PHLX Semiconductor Index measure?
The PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index combines the market performance of major US-listed semiconductor companies into one sector benchmark. Nasdaq’s official methodology covers 30 of the largest eligible companies involved in semiconductor design, distribution, manufacture, or sale and applies modified market-capitalization weighting.
How should investors read the SOX?
The SOX includes chip designers, manufacturers, and equipment companies, so it can show how expectations for artificial intelligence spending, memory conditions, and semiconductor capital investment are moving. A rising index does not mean that every semiconductor company has improving earnings. Investors should also inspect each company’s results, valuation, and index weight.
Are the SOX and semiconductor ETFs the same product?
The SOX is a market benchmark and cannot be purchased as a stock. ETFs such as SOXX and SMH invest under their own index and portfolio rules. Their holdings, weights, fees, and risks can differ even when their names refer to the same industry.
