South Korea takes on secretariat role for international standardization of smart manufacturing
The National Institute of Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that South Korea took on the secretariat role for the Smart Manufacturing Standardization Committee under the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in 2026 year 7 month 12 day. As the secretariat, it will be responsible for committee operations and coordination of technical documents, and will have the duty to convey the views of domestic companies to international discussions.
The National Institute of Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that South Korea took on the secretariat role for the Smart Manufacturing Standardization Committee under the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in 2026 year 7 month 12 day. It said that, together with the fact that it took on the secretariat role, the secretariat will be responsible for committee operations and coordination of technical documents.
The National Institute of Technology and Standards said it will operate a dedicated team to carry out the secretariat’s work. The dedicated team will oversee committee meetings, organize technical agendas, and manage international technical documents.
The government statement said that through the secretariat mission, it will lay the groundwork to coordinate Korea’s technologies and standards in international standardization discussions. It added that the specific term of office and budget execution plan will be provided separately in the statement.
The Ministry of Industry said it will coordinate upcoming international conferences and working group schedules to expand participation by domestic companies and academia. Detailed procedures and documents related to the secretariat country will be announced on the National Institute of Technology and Standards website.
This appointment is a case in which Korea has formally taken over responsibility for committee management within an international standardization organization. The committee is referred to as the "Smart Manufacturing Standardization Committee."
