Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and Kia Autoland Gwangju 2026 received the Minister of Employment and Labor Award at the AI and Smart Industrial Safety Technology Best Practices Challenge. The competition evaluates the results of on-site applications of AI and smart technologies to prevent industrial accidents.
The competition received entries from across the country. 116Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power was the only government or public institution to receive a ministerial award.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power submitted an “AI and Digital Twin-Based Integrated Safety Navigation System” and an intelligent work robot specialized for nuclear power plants, earning high marks. The integrated safety navigation system links hundreds of thousands of equipment locations, safety drawings, and procedures on a single platform, providing workers with optimal travel routes and information on confined and elevated work areas.
The work robots introduced by KHNP, known by names such as “HAMSTOR,” “PRIME,” and “NUVIDA,” perform unmanned operations in locations that are difficult for people to access, including high-radiation areas, confined spaces, and underwater, reducing workers’ radiation exposure and the risk of industrial accidents.
Kia Autoland Gwangju received a ministerial award for its smart safety management system incorporating AI to prevent safety accidents in automated processes. Kia’s “AI LOTO” was developed to address the management of locks and keys under the conventional LOTO (Lock-Out, Tag-Out) method, the inconvenience of repeated entry and exit, and the complexity of managing multiple access.
The event, organized by the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, featured a related presentation in 7 month 9. The two award-winning cases received official recognition for presenting examples of the practical application of AI technology to nuclear power plant safety and automotive process safety, respectively.
