POSCO and Hyundai Motor begin joint development of next-generation electrical steel
POSCO 6 month 11 day, held a kickoff meeting at the Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (RIST) in Pohang to begin joint research into wide electrical steel with a silicon content of 6.5%-grade and core and drive-motor technologies designed to improve electric-vehicle energy efficiency. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT) are providing support, while POSCO is serving as the lead research and development organization.

POSCO said it held a kickoff meeting for the development of next-generation electrical steel at the Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (RIST) in Pohang on 6 month 11 day. The meeting introduced projects to develop wide electrical steel with a silicon content of 6.5%-grade and manufacturing technologies for cores and drive motors designed to improve electric-vehicle energy efficiency. POSCO announced that it would oversee the research as the lead research and development organization.
The project aims to improve the driving efficiency of electric vehicles. The participating organizations said they would jointly pursue the development of core materials for high-efficiency motors and the acquisition of commercialization technologies. The project is titled “Development of manufacturing technologies for wide electrical steel with a silicon content of 6.5%-grade and cores and drive motors designed to improve electric-vehicle energy efficiency.”
The project is being carried out as part of the “Technology Development Project for Specialized Steel Sheet Materials for Core Automotive Parts,” supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT). POSCO said it would oversee the research and that development schedules and equipment investments would continue with government support. The supporting organizations and the project name have been officially confirmed.
The participating companies include Hyundai Motor, SL, and PolFair Electric. Research institutions, including the Research Institute of Industrial Science & Technology (RIST), the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, the Korea Automotive Technology Institute, and universities, also announced that they would participate. The scope of participation covers everything from materials development to motor manufacturing technology.
POSCO and the participating institutions said they would fully launch joint research and development. They said the project aims to verify material performance, develop manufacturing processes, and secure commercialization technology. They said specific schedules and the timing for disclosing interim results would be announced later through disclosures.
