Samsung Electronics bonus dispute brings divisions between business units to the surface

19Samsung Electronics’ labor-management wage negotiations are facing difficulties over how to allocate funds for performance bonuses. The key issue is the approach of using “N% of operating profit” as the bonus pool. The two sides have been unable to narrow their differences over this standard.

The AI memory supercycle has concentrated results in the memory business. As a result, the perceived returns and compensation gap have widened between the finished-products (DX) division and the memory and non-memory businesses within the semiconductor (DS) division. Differences in how employees in each business unit perceive their compensation are affecting labor-management negotiations.

Conflicting interests between business units are also surfacing within the union. Some members have voiced opposition to the union leadership’s negotiating approach. As a result, tensions are spreading throughout the union’s ranks.

The way to compensate the loss-making business unit remains a sticking point in these negotiations, alongside other issues. Reaching an agreement on how to distribute performance bonuses, including to the loss-making business unit, has proved difficult. Labor and management continue to hold further discussions on these issues.
