How the Dow Jones differs from broader US indexes

The Dow contains 30 US blue-chip companies and is weighted by share price. The S&P 500 covers a much larger company set and uses float-adjusted market capitalization, while the Nasdaq Composite emphasizes companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange. A high-priced Dow component can therefore move the DJIA more than a lower-priced component with a larger total market value.
