The S&P 500 measures 500 leading US companies and uses float-adjusted market-cap weighting. The Dow Jones Industrial Average follows 30 large companies with price weighting. The Nasdaq Composite covers eligible common-type securities listed on Nasdaq and uses market-cap weighting. The three indices therefore answer different market questions.
