What the Russell 2000 measures

FTSE Russell defines the Russell 2000 as the small-cap segment of its US equity index family. It represents roughly 2,000 smaller companies within the broader Russell 3000 universe. The methodology applies investability and float adjustments, and membership changes through scheduled reviews. The index is therefore a rules-based small-cap benchmark rather than a permanent list of the same companies.

The S&P 500 comparison above uses the same quote snapshot to show the daily percentage-point gap between smaller companies and a large-cap benchmark. It does not explain why the gap occurred and does not predict future returns.
