Spot VIX versus VIX futures and funds
The spot VIX is an index calculated from a changing portfolio of SPX options and cannot be held directly. VIX futures reflect expectations for volatility at their settlement dates. Exchange-traded products usually hold futures, so roll costs and the futures term structure can make their returns differ materially from today’s spot VIX move.

What is the VIX at today?

What does the VIX measure?
Cboe defines the VIX as an up-to-the-minute estimate of expected S&P 500 volatility over the next 30 days, derived from SPX option bid and ask quotations.
Does a VIX level predict whether the S&P 500 will rise or fall?
No. The VIX estimates the expected size of movement, not its direction. The calculated move ranges on this page are uncertainty estimates rather than price targets.
Can I invest directly in the VIX Index?
No. Cboe explains that the spot VIX is an index based on a changing portfolio of SPX options. Futures, options, and exchange-traded products can behave differently from the spot index.
Why does the VIX often move opposite to the S&P 500?
Demand for downside protection often rises when stock prices fall, which can lift implied volatility. Cboe describes the inverse relationship as a frequent tendency rather than a guaranteed rule.
